Elderly woman is ashamed of her “ugly” hands. Then nurse convinces her they’re beautiful

As we age, we sometimes get embarrassed about the appearance of our bodies because it goes through natural changes. Although we all have insecurities about our bodies, sometimes there are people in our lives who will enlighten us and give us a different take on our insecurities.

Here’s an uplifting story about Brandalyn Mae Porter who works with elderly people in a Texas nursing home. Porter was painting a resident’s nails when she realized the resident had insecurities regarding her hands. After talking to her, Porter changed the woman’s negative outlook into something beautiful.

After the experience, Porter shared her touching story with the Facebook page, Love What Matters, and it went viral.

In the Facebook post, Porter writes:

“Today I painted a new residents nails at work and as we were going over colors, she mentioned she wanted clear. The only thought that came to my mind was ‘CLEAR?! That’s no fun.’ I asked her why she wanted clear and she said, ‘My hands are ugly, I don’t want to draw attention to them.’ I then carefully responded with, ‘Your hands tell the story of your life. They tell the story of love, of care and adventure. These hands have touched and held things that most people can only wish to one day.’ And with that, she went with the color pink for her nails.

Sometimes what we are so insecure with, others find beauty in.”

What a simple yet thoughtful reply to something the resident felt insecure about. With her wonderful statement, Porter was able to convince the elderly woman that her hands are not just beautiful, but they tell stories about the life she lived.

This is an incredible story about a very caring nursing home worker. Bless this angel’s heart for reminding us that beauty has various forms and takes.
