Baby is born with a swollen head, overcomes his condition and leads healthy life

When Jillian Hartman discovered that she was going to have a boy, she was beyond happy. But then at 19 weeks during a routine checkup, Hartman’s happiness turned into concern when doctors told her that her baby, Robert, had been diagnosed with hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus is a build-up of fluids in the cavities deep within the brain. The extra fluids enlarges the head and puts extra pressure on the brain which can result in brain damage.

After informing the mother about the condition, doctors suggested that Jillian should terminate her pregnancy. Doctors informed Jillian that even if Robert did survive past childbirth, he would have no quality of life.

Jillian was between a rock and a hard place, but the decision was easy for the mother. She went against the doctor’s suggestions and hoped for the best for her baby boy.

With support from loved ones, prayers, and a mother’s touch, Jillian and Robert defied the odds and proved the doctors wrong.

Six years later, Robert is in the first grade and healthy. He is intelligent, social and loves music. Although Robert does suffer from some developmental delays, the mother says he is able to read and count. Robert also knows all of his animals, shapes and colors.

Throughout his life, Robert has been in the surgery room countless times to operate on his head. After two different helmets to help reshape his head, Robert continues to make remarkable progress.

As little Robert continues his progress, the family hopes that one day he can lead a normal life.

“Right now he has a wheelchair and a walker,” Jillian said. “He is very strong-willed and likes to move his own chair. He gets frustrated when others try and push it!”

An incredible story about a mother’s intuition regarding her child. With Jillian’s decision to keep her baby, Robert now has the opportunity to experience the world. With that said, I really hope that Robert can lead a normal life. Although he does suffer from developmental delays, I have high expectations for the child that defied all odds.
