Dying wife needs a kidney transplant. Husband spends year exercising so he can donate his kidney
Back in 2013, when doctors told Tracy Spraggins that her lupus would kill her if she didn’t receive a kidney transplant, she didn’t know what to do. She was put on a waitlist, but it was estimated that it would take seven years before she would find a match. Her husband, PJ, knew that seven years was far too long of a wait, so he offered to donate his kidney.
PJ ended up being a match for his wife, but he was told he needed to lose weight in order to normalize his blood pressure. The bad new about not being able to donate his kidney “was a real kick in the gut,” PJ said.Share

After hearing the news about his weight and blood pressure, the husband was determined to save his beloved wife. He embarked on a yearlong diet and exercise routine in efforts to lose weight.
At the start, PJ weighed 265 pounds. He created an exercise routine that centered around biking for cardio. He made sure he was also eating less and scheduled constant check-ins with different doctors at several different hospitals to measure his blood pressure and progress.

Roughly a year later, he was told by doctors that he was healthy enough to have the operation done. The transplant was a success.
PJ and his wife are now recovering in their home in Birmingham, Alabama. Although it was a tough journey to get to this point, the two are very happy that everything is going smoothly.

“We waited, we prayed, and everything turned out great,” Tracy said. Tracy also added that her kidney is “at 100 percent. And it’s at the best it’s ever been.”
“The whole experience has been amazing. I mean just the feeling you get knowing that I was able to help my wife have a better quality of life. That… that means a lot,” said PJ.

What an incredible story about a husband doing whatever it takes to save his beloved wife. The man changed his diet and exercised consistently so that he was healthy enough to donate one of his kidneys. The story moves me because it reminds me that the wedding vow, “in sickness and in health,” held true for this wonderful couple.
